Improve Your Eyes with Blueberries
§
What is AMD?
AMD
is the main cause of severe visual impairment! 1
out of 8 people
over 60 years of age has AMD to some degree. AMD is short for
Age-related Macular Degeneration, which causes an impairment of the sharp
sight called reading sight. The degeneration happens in the sensing cells
of the yellow spot in your eye (called macula) causing the cells not to
function in the normal way.
Two forms of AMD
Dry AMD
is the most common form, which develops with an accumulation of toxins and
a lack of proper nutrients, especially lack of the natural nutrient Lutein.
This will gradually degenerate the yellow spot, which will not be able to
function properly, resulting in diminished eyesight.
Wet AMD
is less common. The condition is caused by new abnormal blood vessels
beginning to grow from behind the retina towards the yellow spot. The
small blood vessels will leak blood and lymph, which will harm the yellow
spot. This condition is much quicker to develop and will cause a faster
loss of eyesight. The older you get, the greater the risk of developing one
of the two forms of AMD.
Steps you can take to avoid AMD!
Stop or cut down smoking:
It is
known that smoking has a negative effect on AMD. If you are a smoker, try
to reduce the amount you smoke, or stop completely.
Diet:
You
should be sure to have a nutritional diet full of vitamins & minerals. Try
to include plenty of foods containing special plant ingredients called
Flavonoids
- the ingredients in food that help eliminate free radicals.
Blueberries
are a natural source of nutrients that contain high amounts of flavonoids,
as are grape seeds and grapes. Another natural ingredient that has proven
vital in connection with AMD is
Lutein
- a pigment found in
many berries and plants.
Many clinical studies have been carried out to establish the importance of
Lutein to your eyes.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE AMD
People suffering
from AMD experience one or more of the following symptoms
1. Reduced
eyesight
(for which glasses are not helping) - most often noticed at shorter
distances, such as while reading. Reduced eyesight is often less impaired
when looking far away.
2. Distorted
forms
– i.e. straight lines are crooked or distorted. The size of objects
appears larger or smaller than they actually are.
3. A
grey or blurred spot
is noticed in the middle of your visual field.
HOW DOES BLUE
BERRY HELP?
In blueberry there
is a multiplied effect of beneficial blueberries with the additional
synergetic action of eyebright, grape seed extracts and Lutein. According
to clinical studies you should take at least 6 mg. of Lutein per day to
support the Macula.
Grape seeds are
known to counteract the damaging effects of free radicals, especially in
watery environments like your eye. Eyebright benefits the mucous membranes
of your eye. Many elderly people have problems with dry eyes and eyebright
can help to get a better balance in the mucous membranes and avoid
irritation of your eyes.
